Chueca

Markets, cocktails and a quiet palace

Chueca sits east of Gran Vía and holds two market halls, several historic cocktail bars and a handful of cafes. The Museum of Romanticism is one of its quieter sights.

The Mercado de San Antón was rebuilt in 2011 as a modern market and is open Monday to Saturday 09:30 to 21:30, with food stalls until midnight. The Mercado de Barceló on Calle de Barceló also has restaurants on its top floor. The Casa de las Siete Chimeneas on Plaza del Rey was built between 1574 and 1577.

The Museum of Romanticism occupies a palace built in 1776 on Calle de San Mateo. Its page says it is open only in part during emergency works, so check before you go.

Bar Cock opened in 1921 and Coctelería Del Diego in 1992 on Calle de la Reina. Libertad 8 has been a cafe since 1976, and El Búho Real, open since 1984, is a live-music bar.

Chueca (L5) is the Metro stop the tourism board lists for the Mercado de San Antón, and Alonso Martínez (L4, L5, L10) and Tribunal (L1, L10) serve the Museum of Romanticism.

Where to eat

La Tasquita de Enfrente on Calle de la Ballesta is a tapas bar reopened by the founder's son. La Duquesita on Calle de Fernando VI is a pastry shop run by Oriol Balaguer.
